AbstractRecently, a literature has emerged using empirical techniques to study the evolution of international cities over many centuries; however, few studies examine long-run change within cities. Conventional models and concepts are not always appropriate and data issues make long-run neighbourhood analysis particularly problematic. This paper addresses some of these points. First, it discusses why the analysis of long-run urban change is important for modern urban policy and considers the most important concepts. Second, it constructs a novel data set at the micro level, which allows consistent comparisons of London neighbourhoods in 1881 and 2001. Third, the paper models some of the key factors that affected long-run change, including the role of housing. There is evidence that the relative social positions of local urban areas persist over time but, nevertheless, at fine spatial scales, local areas still exhibit change, arising from aggregate population dynamics, from advances in technology, and also from the effects of shocks, such as wars. In general, where small areas are considered, long-run changes are likely to be greater, because individuals are more mobile over short than long distances. Coccoliths are micro-structured biomineral particles found in cell protective covering layers of coccolithophore species. They are mainly composed of CaCO3 and their individual crystal entities are arranged in such a way that they construct complex and unique structures. This complexity is found down to the individual particle level and appears to have promising properties to offer. This study focuses on the essential step prior to any kind of implementation, which is the recovery of the material. It summarizes cleaning protocols found in literature, compares them for the first time for the same freshly cultivated material and addresses challenges that still need to be overcome. Further, it highlight the advantages and disadvantages of the best cleaning protocols, suggests optimizations with promising results and uses size distribution measurements to analyse the recovery efficiency. To that end, further characterization techniques, new for coccoliths, are introduced and used to improve our current knowledge of the particles behaviour. 相似文献

Undoped and Cu-doped ZnSe nanoparticle (NPs) were prepared and grown hydrothermally in aqueous media assisted by microwave irradiation (MWIR) at different synthesis conditions of pH and MWIR times. In the mentioned process, sodium hydroxide (NaBH4), used for preparing selenium ions source with dissolving it and selenium powder in deionized water. To investigate the structural aspects and nanoparticles morphology, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used. According to the results of XRD, no displacement was seen in the position of XRD peaks of ZnSe nanoparticles by altering the pH and microwave irradiation time. XRD analysis demonstrated cubic zinc blende NPs and TEM images indicated round shape morphology of them. Depending to the microwave irradiation time, upon the XRD outputs, the size of the synthesized NPs were in the range of 1.54–2.18 nm. In this research, for samples synthesized at different pHs (= 8, 10.2, 11.2 and 12.2), at two microwave irradiation time of 0 and 6 min, and also at the presence of Cu-dopant (with the contents of 0, 0.1,0.75 and 1.5%), structural characteristics such as dislocation density(δ), lattice strain(ε), size of nanoparticles (D) and full width at half maximum (FWHM:βhkl) have been evaluated upon the Scherrer and Williamson-Hall methods, in which undoped and ZnSe:Cu 0.1% synthesized at pH = 11.2 have the best crystalline quality; such results for the optimum samples, introduce them as promising materials in optoelectronic devices. The results of structural features obtained from Scherrer and Williamson-Hall approaches are highly intercorrelated and show the same trends with the variation of synthesis conditions. 相似文献

针对基于局部熵进行加密图像视觉安全性评估存在块效应的局限性,引入图像的边缘特征,通过共有边缘来衡量加密图像与原始图像的边缘相似度,消除了块效应。由于局部熵对加密等级低的图像不敏感,边缘相似度对加密等级高的图像不敏感,将两个评估方法进行自适应融合,提出[SLEES](Local Entropy and Edge Similarity,[SLEES])指标。通过改变图像像素位置和图像像素值的加密方式处理图像和视频帧进行测试,实验结果表明,[SLEES]指标相比传统评估指标有更好的鲁棒性,评估范围更广。 相似文献

Code comments convey information about the programmers' intention in a more explicit but less rigorous manner than source code. This information can assist programmers in various tasks, such as code comprehension, reuse, and maintenance. To better understand the properties of the comments existing in the source code, we analyzed more than 450 000 comments across 136 popular open-source software systems coming different domains. We found that the methods involving header comments and internal comments were shown low percentages in software systems, ie, 4.4% and 10.27%, respectively. As an application of our findings, we propose an automatic approach to determine whether a method needs a header comment, known as commenting necessity identification. Specifically, we identify the important factors for determining the commenting necessity of a method and extract them as structural features, syntactic features, and textual features. Then, by applying machine learning techniques and noise-handling techniques, we achieve a precision of 88.5% on eight open-source software from GitHub. The encouraging experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach. 相似文献

This paper addresses reliable and efficient calculation of the mode of a multivariate sample, which is a classical fusion function. In particular, we focus on the inputs given on the unit simplex, when aggregating elements of Atanassov intuitionistic fuzzy sets, interval-valued fuzzy sets and their extensions, as well as compositional data. We outline the use of a specially designed 2-additive fuzzy measures and the Choquet integral for the purposes of reducing computational complexity in higher dimensions. The parameters governing the crystallisation of paracetamol using various conventional techniques has been extensively studied, however the factors influencing the drug crystallisation using spray drying is not as well understood. The aim of this work was to investigate the crystallisation of an active pharmaceutical ingredient through evaporative crystallisation using a spray dryer to study the physicochemical properties of the drug and to use semi-empirical equations to gain insight into the morphology and particle size of the dried powder. Paracetamol solutions were spray dried at various inlet temperatures ranging from 60 °C to 120 °C and also from a series of inlet feed solvent compositions ranging from 50/50% v/v ethanol/water to 100% ethanol and solid-state characterisation was done. The size and morphology of the dried materials were altered with a change in spray drying parameters, with an increase in inlet temperature leading to an increase in particle Sauter mean diameter (from 3.0 to 4.4 µm) and a decrease in the particle size with an increase in ethanol concentration in the feed (from 4.6 to 4.4 µm) as a result of changes in particle density and atomised droplet size. The morphology of the dried particles consisted of agglomerates of individual crystallites bound together into larger semi-spherical agglomerates with a higher tendency for particles having crystalline ridges to form at higher ethanol concentrations of the feed. 相似文献

The growing energy demand and the impact of polluting gases lead to the necessity of alternative energy sources and conversion energy devices. Fuel cells (FCs) appears as a suitable solution for facing the mentioned issues. Predicting the behavior of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) under different conditions represents a proper initial step to solve the several issues, e.g., aging water balance problems, which occur inside the cell during the energy conversion process. Understanding microstructural impacts of the diffusion media, water management issues of FCs or the impacts of the inlet reactant gases to the cell represent some of the processes that have to be analyzed to improve the efficiency and behavior of FCs.The current study aims, based on experimentally collected data, to propose empirical correlations that describe and predict the performance of a PEFC. The single cell considered in this study corresponds to a single PEFC with a Nafion® 112 membrane as electrolyte and with an effective area of 25 cm2. Relative humidity as a function of the reactive inlet gas temperature, as well as the power and the current density as a function of the cell/reactant gas temperature gradient are analyzed. In addition, correlations for power and current density as a function of the relative humidity (RH) have been proposed. Our correlations are obtained for an operating voltage of 0.6 V. It was shown a strong correlation between the power and current densities with the RH since the membrane conductivity depends mainly on the water content. The PEFC behavior was evaluated at different RHs. The results show big losses of operating power and current densities, as well as an increment of the resistance of the membrane when it operates at low RH. 相似文献

During neuronal circuit formation, axons progressively develop into a presynaptic compartment aided by extracellular signals. Axons display a remarkably high degree of autonomy supported in part by a local translation machinery that permits the subcellular production of proteins required for their development. Here, we review the latest findings showing that microRNAs (miRNAs) are critical regulators of this machinery, orchestrating the spatiotemporal regulation of local translation in response to cues. We first survey the current efforts toward unraveling the axonal miRNA repertoire through miRNA profiling, and we reveal the presence of a putative axonal miRNA signature. We also provide an overview of the molecular underpinnings of miRNA action. Our review of the available experimental evidence delineates two broad paradigms: cue-induced relief of miRNA-mediated inhibition, leading to bursts of protein translation, and cue-induced miRNA activation, which results in reduced protein production. Overall, this review highlights how a decade of intense investigation has led to a new appreciation of miRNAs as key elements of the local translation regulatory network controlling axon development. 相似文献
